Hellenic Club of Canberra Refurbishment
How Savil Projects delivered a complete refurbishment of 3 Bars, a Restaurant, Sports TAB, Gaming Lounge and upper floor lobby to a fully operational 50,000-member club, running a 24/7 program of works, with completion in an accelerated program.
Our Construction team work with you to manage and deliver your venue refurbishment. We work with internal stakeholders, architects, and designers to offer flexible options, such as staged commercial construction renovations. Your refurbishment doesn’t have to be complicated.
Savil Projects were engaged to complete the construction refurbishment projects for the Hellenic Club of Canberra. Savil Projects worked around the clock 24/7 to renovate the Triton Lounge bar, the Bistro Bar, the Sports Lounge and Bar, Filos Taverna, Sports TAB, Gaming Lounge, and refurbishment of the upstairs lobby all whilst the clubs’ bars, restaurants and entertainment areas remained fully operational throughout the project.
The Hellenic Club of Canberra has a proud history spanning over 40 years in Woden. With 50,000 members frequenting it’s three restaurants, cafe, bars, lounge, and an award winning sports bar, as well as three major function rooms. The club has continued its proud and rich history positioned at the centre of its community as a prominent social and cultural venue both in the Woden Valley and broader Canberra.
Triton Lounge Bar, Bistro Bar, Filos Tavern Bar and Restaurant and Main Sports Bar
We carried out the refurbishments one stage at a time, to accommodate regular meal sittings and events, as well as scheduled club and promotional events, starting with the Filos restaurant and then moving onto the Triton Lounge Bar, the Sports lounge Bar, followed by the Bistro Bar.
With interiors and finishes designed by Architect, Steven Cetrtek of Thursday Architecture, all aspects of the Refurbishment had special attention to detail with the inclusion of wall tiles in a blended herringbone pattern specially imported from Spain, and custom-built illuminated wine and drinks shelving to match and blend the herringbone design.
We stripped the bars completely to the interior concrete walls and installed new flooring, cool rooms, beer lines, customised stainless steel bar benches, fridges and equipment and fixtures to create a modern yet versatile aesthetic.
Sports TAB
The TAB sports lounge was due for a facelift, as the main media to catch the big game was presented on a projector screen providing viewing difficulties, Savil demolished two walls – one would be the main event viewing screen and the other would host the main races.
We built two oversized recessed walls, one wall boasting 15 TVs for an enhanced viewing experience and the other accommodating 2 large screens and 4 smaller screens below showing upcoming races and results.
This was all finished off tastefully by adapting to the colour scheme of the sports lounge and ensuring finishing touches were executed to the highest possible standard.
Gaming Lounge
Followed by the Sports TAB refurbishment Savil was engaged by The Hellenic Club for a large-scale insurance claim project. A mains fire line in the ceiling of the upper floor had ruptured and flooded the upper floor lobby, down the stairs and into the entire gaming lounge.
Savil mobilised their team rapidly to create a make safe and programmed a 2 Staged project co-ordinated with the insurer and all stakeholders.
The gaming lounge was split into 2 sections to ensure The Hellenic Club would not lose all revenue from the gaming machines. When attending to the gaming floor works Savil ran a 48-hour program around the clock, disconnected gaming machines, removed and stored, demolished and disposed of the waterlogged bases, removed all flooring, prepared and installed new flooring, new machine plinths, installed machines and connected back up to power and data.
The following night this process was repeated for Stage 2 of the gaming lounge, the works were a great success providing the extremely short, minimally intrusive, and detailed turnaround.
Upper Floor Lobby
The Hellenic Club had been flooded by a ruptured fire line in the ceiling of the upper floor.
The architectural ceiling above the rear staircase, the ceiling above the common areas on the upper floors and the carpet tiles were all in need of replacement.
We engaged a Hygienist to investigate possible black mould forming inside the ceiling void, Savil engaged specialist cleaners to remove the black mould forming on the structural timbers within the ceiling space.
Once the ceiling had been demolished, cleaned, tested, and signed off by the Hygienist and the insurer we were able to rebuild the ceiling as a like-for-like scenario.
Many of the works including scaffolding, demolition and cutting of materials were performed after hours to ensure the club would run as normal. The hoarding was built to cater for all the club’s regular and special events such as wakes, weddings, and conferences to keep running in the function rooms on each side of the site area.
The Club was to remain fully operational for members and guests to utilise the function rooms, restaurants, bistro, gaming, and bar areas. Throughout the project, we worked closely with management to ensure minimal disruption to the members and clientele, completing heavy works during downtime hours to keep noise to a minimum, and managing a 24/7 schedule to expedite the completion of the refurbishments.
Outcome
Our client was very impressed with the speed in which the works were completed, the results of the refurbishments, and the fact that they did not have to lose business throughout the refurbishment period.
Breathing new life into your club doesn’t have to be hard, or disruptive. Let our qualified construction team manage your club refurbishment.
